Dear Members
You are invited to apply to the 22nd Teachers Training Conference to be held at Manchester Conference Centre, The University of Manchester, on 2nd and 3th April 2016. The theme of the conference is “Chinese Education in the UK – The Complete Picture” and the proceedings will be conducted in English, Mandarin and Cantonese where appropriate.
Our keynote speaker on Day One is Mrs Bernardette Holmes MBE, a Bye-Fellow of Downing College, University of Cambridge and Campaign Director of Speak to the Future; she is currently advising the Department for Eductaion on curriculum reform for modern languages and is lead drafter of the new GCSE criteria for both modern and ancient languages. She will be speaking at the conference on “Languages for a Global Future”.

During the conference, there will be stands for booksellers and the UKFCS to exhibit their publications, including printed books, e-books and language learning computer applications

| Keynote 1 | Languages for a global futureIn a world that is hyper-connected and mobile, the ability to speak more than one language is an essential characteristic of being educated in the 21st Century. The ability to speak Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) and English offers young people a significant, competitive advantage in the labour market and opens up career opportunities in many different professional fields. This session will look at the benefits of high levels of fluency in language and culture with reference to employability and to cognitive flexibility and learning gains. It will explore the kinds of linguistic and cultural experience that best prepares young people professional life and how such experience is embedded within the expectations of the new National Curriculum and new examinations. The session will put forward a vision for the teaching and learning of Chinese which proposes greater recognition and integration of complementary schools with mainstream education and seeks to link business professionals more closely with schools and universities.Speaker: Bernadette Holmes MBE |

| Workshop C | Developing a dynamic classroom, working with technology (iPad)This workshop looks at some of the ways technology can be used in your classroom, and how it can enhance both your teaching and students’ learning. Using practical examples from UCL IOE training, and from the classroom, Philippa will explain how mobile technology in particular can change your classroom dynamic, putting learning in the hands of the learner. Participants will also have an opportunity to try out ideas in the session, using their mobile devices!Facilitator: Philippa Vallely |

| Workshop E | Teaching demonstration videoThis workshop uses video clips taken from Chinese complementary schools as a resource for teacher development. Participants will discuss strategies used to promote active learning in the classroom. | Workshop F | Qualification and career developmentParticipants will be shown different routes into getting a teaching qualification in the UK. Will also look at other training opportunities to further develop teaching skills.Facilitator: Catalina Brook |
| Workshop G | Digital Story-tellingThis workshop is aiming for all participants to learn how to embed digital storytelling pedagogy in to their language teaching. In this workshop participants will be working with a partner to create and present a simple bilingual (Chinese-English) digital story using Movie Maker.As we do not have access to a computer lab, we expect all participants: 1. to bring their own laptop (MUST be PC) for workshop. 2. to download Movie Maker onto their laptop – for Windows XP & for Windows 7 or 8 download from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/get-movie-maker-downloadFacilitator: Li Hong Man |
| Workshop H | Integrating culture and language teachingIn this workshop Hua will first share his experience about how to integrate culture into language teaching with the methodology of TBLT (Task-based Language Teaching) mainly in teaching the Pre-U and A-Level Chinese course. He will also talk about how culture can lend itself to partnership working when running a film project with a partner school in China. The participants will then have the opportunities to contribute their own ideas and approaches to the discussion.Facilitator: Hua Yan |
| Workshop I | Learning Through DramaIn this session we will explore different methods and classroom techniques to keep pupils engaged while learning. It will be a very practical session to demonstrate the benefits of using drama to inspire and teach pupils. This will include an introduction to a range of games and exercises designed to strengthen language learning and applying those skills to a sample lesson plan.Drama can be an incredibly useful tool to not only provide a sense of enjoyment in education, but also to cultivate a desire and positive attitude to keep learning. We will be exploring how drama can assist teachers and facilitators to accommodate a wider range of learning styles in the classroom and discuss what is best suited to your pupils.Facilitator:Mei Mac |

| Workshop K | Using stories, rhymes and poems in language teachingChildren love to listen to stories and fairy tales! Therefore this lively and interactive workshop will give the teachers plenty of ideas on how to exploit original and made up stories, rhymes, and short poems in order to implement the language. Both books and ppt presentations will be used to maximize the potential of the written word even for young children. The session will be led in English with examples in Italian easily transferable to other languages.Facilitator: Adalgisa Serio |
| Workshop L | Teaching oral CantoneseThis workshop will look at the differences between written Chinese and oral Cantonese. It will also discuss effective ways of teaching pupils how to deal with the switch between the two.Facilitator: Eileen Lee |

Conference Fees
Member: £180 (Saturday and Sunday)
Non-member: £275 (Saturday and Sunday)
Day delegate: £130 whole conference (£70 per day) for members and £130 per day for non-members (exclusive of Saturday night accommodation and conference dinner)
